Overview

Position will supervise, provide leadership and direction to the Network Systems Engineers with responsibility for testing, implementation, maintenance, administration and engineering for the Blackhawk Technical College Server Platforms and Network Infrastructure.   Duties include installing and optimizing systems for performance, availability, fault tolerance and security. Position works in collaboration with the IT Systems Manager, Executive Director of Information Technology, and System Engineers to assess near and long term network capacity needs to develop the IT Strategic Plan. Position will require some after hours monitoring and response to service outages, and alerts, additionally the position is oncall 24 x 7. Additional duties include documentation, programming, monitoring, consulting, troubleshooting, analysis, design, hardware specification, and installation. The position also includes training on the topics of data networking and technology.

Responsibilities

Provide advanced technical services, consultation, administration, support and maintenance for BTC Servers.

  1. Lead initiatives and provide advanced technical services and consultation in accordance with Blackhawk Technical College standards and policies.
  2. Serve as project manager for managing IT project life cycle; to include material resources and people.
  3. Lead business requirements management activities and design and develop solutions to meet business needs.
  4. Design and optimize server systems for performance availability, fault tolerance, and security using automation when possible.
  5. Maintain and manage several VMWare clusters with oversight of current and future capacity planning needs.
  6. Administers the Active Directory environment including creating/modifying/maintaining user’s group policies.
  7. Configure, troubleshoot, and maintain Microsoft Exchange email system following Microsoft best practices.
  8. Configure, monitor, troubleshoot and maintain enterprise anti-malware and content filtering systems.
  9. Consult with technical support peers and vendor technicians and provide leadership to investigate and resolve complex network problems.
  10. Manage the enterprise backup and restore operations to ensure adequate backup and restorability of server systems and data.
  11. Establish and document technology standards in accordance with BTC and industry standards.
  12. Make recommendations to management concerning the acquisition of enterprise solutions, including hardware and software.
  13. Investigate and test new versions, patches, and fixes for servers to mitigate risk prior to production implementation.
  14. Utilize the Change Management process to manage network changes and minimize the impact on the customer.
  15. Knowledge of all TCP/IP protocols, routing protocols, 802.1x, 802.11, VOIP, QOS, and/or emerging network protocols and technologies.
  16. Coordinates the development, implementation and maintenance of systems applications such as VDI, firewalls, wireless, and desktop security configurations.

 

Responsible for advanced technical services, consultation, support, and maintenance for the BTC Storage Area Network and enterprise backup and restore operations.

  1. Lead efforts to review and design of server systems and determine if changes would improve operational efficiency.
  2. Monitor, analyze, and optimize storage systems for performance, availability, fault tolerance, and security using automation where possible.
  3. Develop and provide responsive resolution of technical problems and issues utilizing the helpdesk ticketing system. Promptly research, document, and report hardware/software failures to the appropriate technical support person or vendor representative using established procedures.
  4. Lead and consult with technical support peers and vendor technicians to investigate and resolve complex network problems.
  5. Responsible for capacity planning for server, virtualization environment, and storage systems.

System Administration, consultation, assistance and support to ITS, MIS and BTC customers regarding all server system technologies including virtual desktops and servers.

  1. Provide system administration for server and desktop platforms as well as any other technologies that are supported by the college.
  2. Lead technical cross-functional teams to test, evaluate, implement and support server and or platform technologies.
  3. Evaluate proposals for technical and/or customer-driven projects and make recommendations concerning all technical aspects.
  4. Research, recommend, and obtain quotes for hardware, software and services for budgeting expense process.
  5. Manage technical projects effectively, utilizing best practices, thorough documentation, and project management tools.
  6. Recommend and /or direct the selection of proper resources and applications to best meet business requirements in accordance with BTC standards.
  7. Provide a high level of customer service and communicate effectively.

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in computer-related area from an accredited post-secondary institution.
  2. Minimum of three (3) years of directly managing VMware ESXi architecture supporting enterprise virtualization environments. Direct experience supporting DRS, vDistributed Switches, High Availability, and Fault Tolerance.
  3. Minimum of four (4) years information technology experience with recent direct experience installing and maintaining server hardware and software for Microsoft Windows Server 2003, 2008 and 2012 R2.
  4. Minimum of three (3) years direct experience supporting Windows 7/Windows 10 and Office 2010/2013/2016 software.
  5. Minimun of three (3) years erperience with TCP/IP protocols, routing protocols, 802.1x, 802.11, VOIP, QOS
  6. Technical certifications such as A+, Networking +, CCNA, CCNP, VCP, MCITP, MCTS desired.
