The Academic Advisor provides quality academic, vocational, and career advising to Blackhawk Technical College students and transfer students. The Advisor will assist students in transitioning to the College, assessing academic skills, and exploring academic and career options. This position will monitor student progress and provide support throughout the students’ academic career at BTC. Advisors act as liaisons and partners with campus departments in their efforts to develop and implement programs and services that foster an inclusive and engaged campus community which supports academic excellence and student success.


  1. College Transition
    1. Assist students in transitioning to the college environment by identifying and explaining policies and procedures.
    2. Meet with prospective students individually and in groups to discuss career and post secondary options.
    3. Monitor academic progress of students and develop intervention strategies to assist students in their development.
    4. Respond to student concerns/problems by advising and referring them to appropriate resources.
  2. Advising
    1. Guide students in making informed decisions regarding educational and career goals.
    2. Meet with new students to create an academic plan and provide resources and assistance in identifying career and academic goals.
    3. Provide timely, appropriate, and accurate information regarding program of study, program qualifications, course content, course selection, prerequisites, recommended course load, credit for prior learning process, admissions, retention, and graduation.
    4. Develop appropriate academic plans with students for program completion and Financial Aid policy purposes.
    5. Assist student in complying with administrative and program requirements such as scheduling, registration, and appeals.
    6. Engage students in continuing assessment of success and resource needs.
  3. Student Development and Retention
    1. Plan and participate in College student development and retention programs.
    2. Develop, host and present advising materials, systems, and presentations to support individual, group and online student sessions.
    3. Visit BTC Centers and outreach sites and provide information related to BTC programs, services, procedures, and career information that will recruit basic skill students and GED graduates into occupational programs.
  4. Departmental and Campus Responsibilities
    1. Support the district’s initiatives to promote human diversity and an appreciation for multiculturalism.
    2. Assist in the preparation of presentations about BTC programs, Career Pathways, job outlook, student support services and college admissions process to perspective students and Community Based Organizations.
    3. Represent the college in student and community outreach efforts.
    4. Participate in team and division planning, professional development activities, and college-wide committees as assigned and appropriate.
    5. Provide standard reports including client and grant reporting data as requested.
    6. Use web services and software programs such as BANNER, MS Office, email, Image Now, and other programs to assist in meeting objectives of the College.
    7. Record data on student interactions using appropriate technology.
    8. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  1. Excellent interpersonal, customer service, communication, and organizational skills.
  2. Demonstrated ability to promote the understanding and respect of cultural and human diversity and abilities.
  3. Experience working in a dynamic team environment.
  4. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Software and general knowledge/efficiency of computer tools.


Education & Experience:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, education, student personnel services, or a related field.
  2. Two (2) years work experience in an educational setting. Post-secondary experience is preferred.
  3. Previous experience in admissions, career assessment, enrollment management, or student recruitment desired.
