  • Overview

    The Dean of Business and General Education oversees educational and training programs that serve college students and outside agencies. This position provides leadership to students, staff and faculty, to ensure student success, effective use of physical and human resources, and high-level relations with area employers, schools and government agencies. This position reports to the Vice President of Academic Affairs.


    The dean will: oversee day-to-day operations of the division; coordinate with faculty and staff; and address student conduct or grievance issues. Particular areas include: accreditation, continuous improvement processes; program development, outcome assessment monitoring, assessment and evaluation; faculty and staff hiring, workload assignments, and evaluation; budget development and management; class scheduling, equipment and facility oversight; and coordination across divisions within Academic Affairs and the college. The dean will also focus on: growing articulations with high schools; strengthening advisory committees; bolstering relations with regional partners; responding to labor market information trends; and supporting faculty growth and development.


    Administer the Programs (Business and General Education)

    1. Oversee the instructional offerings (online, distance, and traditional format) to ensure effective and relevant programming to meet student needs.

    2. Build course schedules and instructional staff schedules focused on meeting student needs, while maximizing program enrollments and aligning faculty workloads.

    3. Ensure timely and effective completion of course competency, program outcome, and core abilities assessments.

    4. Partner with Student Services and Program Faculty to market programs and recruit students.

    5. Ensure effective, timely and comprehensive program assessment and accreditation processes are followed.

    6. Direct the investigation, development, and implementation of new program offerings in response to documented business, industry, labor, government and community needs.

    7. Participate in program evaluation and development of enhancement plans in support of the continuous program improvement.

    8. Support the program transfer agreements with four-year colleges and universities, where appropriate.

    9. Partner with Enrollment services to facilitate articulation agreements with district high schools.

    10. Monitor equipment use, status and replacement, in collaboration with program faculty to ensure relevance and quality of instruction as well as safety

    11. Implement and support shared programs with other technical colleges.


    Partner with Business & Industry

    1. Work to build, maintain and strengthen relationships with Program Advisory Committees to ensure programs are meeting business and industry needs.

    2. Develop and support relationships with area business to identify future course/program needs to meet employment demands within the region, grow a pool of potential adjunct faculty, and nurture workplace experience opportunities for students.

    3. Develop relationship to increase resources available to programs to enhance student learning.


    Develop and administer budgets for the Division

    1. Provide organizational leadership, with involvement of staff, to develop division-level capital and operational budgets that ensure well-planned resource identification and allocation.

    2. Lead and conduct annual operational planning (prioritization, implementation, and evaluation) in areas such as facilities, instructional technology, equipment, change objectives, etc.

    3. Develop, manage, and monitor overall division budget to maintain appropriate learning environments.


    Direct, support, and evaluate division staff.

    1. Provide leadership and direction for Administrative Support Staff within the division to ensure adequate student and staff support.

    2. Support, hire, and evaluate division staff, including Faculty (full- and part-time), Lab Assistants, Support Staff, and Administrators.

    3. Promote professional development of staff within Division, and plan expenses accordingly within division budget.

    4. Support divisional faculty and advising of students.


    Assist with program related student issues.

    1. Advise and assist students with concerns and problem resolution.

    2. Partner with Student Services to resolve student waitlist and registration concerns to improve the student experience.

    3. Provide leadership and support to student organization and activities to promote student learning and campus involvement.


    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

    1. Strong leadership skills.

    2. Strong communication skills (Oral and Written)

    3. Ability to problem solve.

    4. Ability to work with individuals at all levels of the organization.


    Education & Experience:

    1. Master’s Degree within program area of division or educational related field.

    2. Two (2) years of teaching experience and the post-secondary level.

    3. Four (4) years of supervisor/leadership experience.
