  • Overview

    The Surgical Lab Technician Instructor provides instruction and leadership within the Surgical Lab Technician Program. The Chair will oversee the program delivery, schedule, staffing, and content to ensure developing and maintaining a quality program of instruction while implementing and managing a flexible education structure within the program.

    Responsibilities

    Instructional Leadership

    1. Function as a lead instructor in assigned program courses.
    2. Lead the flexible delivery initiative for the program.
    3. Coordinate, plan, implement, and evaluate course offerings within the Surgical Lab Technician Program to ensure they stay relevant to industry needs.
    4. In collaboration with Dean Health Science and Public Safety, coordinate the recruitment and hiring process part-time instructors and program lab assistants.
    5. Support and advise adjunct faculty in the completion of their duties and responsibilities. Ensure awareness of department and college policies and procedures.
    6. Meet with faculty for the purpose of program improvement and evaluation.
    7. Oversee core curricula of the Surgical Tech Programs to ensure meeting accreditation guidelines and industry needs.
    8. Lead accreditation activities for the programs.

     

    Develop and administer program budgets for assigned areas of responsibility.

    1. Identify program needs.
    2. In collaboration with the grants office and BTC Foundation identify resources to support educational needs.
    3. In collaboration with the Dean prepare personnel, non-personnel and capital budget proposals and obtain approval.
    4. Coordinate purchasing functions.
    5. Monitor expenditures and ensure compliance with approved budget policies.
    6. Reconcile and balance accounts.

     

    Assist in program related student issues.

    1. Work collaboratively with Student Services in the admissions process, in the registration process and in the counseling of students.
    2. Advise and assist students with concerns and problem resolution.
    3. Work with disability services to provide student accommodations as needed.
    4. Facilitate scheduling, registration, and advanced standing for individual students.

     

    Student Recruitment and Program Promotion

    1. Assist in student academic advisement for program students.
    2. Enhance communication with area high schools through collaboration with student services.
    3. Build community and business relations, including but not limited to: career-oriented activates, community visits, recruitment of advisory committee members, and participation in college promotional events.

    Qualifications

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

    1. Strong oral and written communication skills.
    2. Excellent problem solving and trouble shooting skills.
    3. Demonstrated ability to interact with diverse populations.

    Education & Experience:

    1. Bachelor Degree in Healthcare related discipline or an Associate Degree in Surgical Technology and significant work related experience as a Surgical Technician.
    2. Five (5) years either in the operating room scrub role or as an instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both within the past 10 years.
    3. Credentialed as a Surgical Technician through a national certification program accredited by the national Commission of Certifying Agencies (NCCA).
    4. Proficient in instructional methodology, curriculum design, and program planning.
