  • Overview

    The IT Systems Engineer provides technical support for IT infrastructure with responsibility for testing, implementation, maintenance, administration and engineering for the Blackhawk Technical College Server Platforms and Network Infrastructure.   Support includes: technical planning, testing, implementation, maintenance, and administration of the BTC physical and virtual server platforms, Microsoft Exchange, storage area network (SAN), the enterprise backup and restoration systems, utility and management servers and appliances, and malware protection systems. Duties include installing and optimizing systems for performance, availability, fault tolerance and security. Position will require some after hours monitoring and response to service outages, and alerts, additionally the position is oncall 24 x 7. Additional duties include documentation, programming, monitoring, consulting, troubleshooting, analysis, design, hardware specification, and installation. This position reports to the IT Systems Manager and collaborates closely with the other IT System Engineers.

    Responsible for Design, Implementation, and Administration of BTC Server Infrastructure.

    1. Design and optimize server systems for performance, availability, fault tolerance, and security using automation where possible.
    2. Administer, coordinate, and perform system administration for Windows Server and desktop platforms as well as any other technologies that are supported by BTC.
    3. Integrate services, including database, e-mail, print, and backup servers and their associated software into enterprise systems (such as, student information system and learning management system).
    4. Configure, troubleshoot, and maintain VMware clusters following VMware, SAN and Server best practices.
    5. Administer the enterprise backup and restore operations to ensure adequate backup and restorability of server systems and data.
    6. Coordinate with other ITS staff and provide direction concerning all aspects of server considerations that may impact application deployment.
    7. Research, recommend, and provide consultation in the use of emerging technologies to ensure upgrade and migration paths are available for future technology systems.
    8. Develop specifications and purchase requisitions for hardware and software.
    9. Establish and document technology standards in accordance with BTC and industry standards.


    Provide technical support and maintenance for the Microsoft Active Directory, Email, and Enterprise Anti-virus/spam

    1. Configure, troubleshoot and maintain Active Directory; define and setup user accounts and security; create and maintain network volume and directory structure within Active Directory, including working in coordination with other technical staff to perform these duties.
    2. Manage, configure, and troubleshoot Microsoft Exchange email system. Develop and define email groups and security.
    3. Administer the enterprise anti-virus and anti-spam operations to ensure adequate prevention and covers of all BTC systems and data.
    4. Maintain hardware, firmware, and software patches to ensure a stable computer platform.


    Provide technical server support, coordination, administration, and IT security

    1. Analyze security bulletins for security vulnerabilities applicable to the BTC enterprise. Determine and apply necessary security upgrades or employ the appropriate configurations to ensure security best practices to minimize vulnerabilities and reduce security risks.
    2. Investigate and test new versions, patches, and fixes for servers to mitigate risk prior to production implementation.
    3. Configure, implement, and support of DHCP/DNS.
    4. Develop and implement preventative measures by utilizing system utilities and invoking corrective measures in advance of failure.
    5. Manage, configure and support SSL certificates on servers.
    6. Provide technical leadership in providing solutions to mitigate audits findings/concerns.
    7. Assign and maintain confidential information including passwords, access lists, or other sensitive data, and update computer systems to permit required access.

    Provide advanced trouble-shooting and service restoration for server and component problems.

    1. Monitor and analyze anomalies of server resources. Provide analysis, determine solutions, high-level recommendations and appropriate reports to ITS management.
    2. Lead and direct troubleshooting for complex server or component failures with other technical support staff.
    3. Consult with system engineers, and/or vendor technical support to investigate and resolve complex server/network problems.
    4. Research, troubleshoot, and resolve system problems using industry best practices support processes.
    5. Participate in the “On Call” rotation process.

    Provide technical support coordination, documentation, and administration functions.

    1. Utilize the helpdesk workorder system application to provide complete, accurate and timely documentation of all troubleshooting processes to provide status reporting as well as a historical knowledge base for trend and analysis.
    2. Provide Tier 2 and 3 support for the ITS Help Desk service and operations.
    3. Develop and present documentation and provide guidance to the Management Team regarding the status of server, application, or system problems, and escalate problems to the appropriate technical staff for resolution.
    4. Support standard change management process to coordinate and deliver new or changed server resources. Coordinate changes through ITS change process.
    5. Maintain and document server equipment inventories, and maintain logs of equipment configurations and repairs.
    6. Collaborate with technical staff to test the effectiveness of new application software or new releases of current application software.
    7. Provide customer support and assistance via telephone and personal contact with customers.
    8. Provide backup and cross functional support to Infrastructure Team as needed.

    Other duties and responsibilities.

    1. Attend staff meetings, providing reports and proposals for consideration.
    2. Attend training sessions, technical seminars, and vendor demonstrations concerning hardware, software, and techniques with possible application for use at BTC.
    3. Evaluate and recommend hardware and software for possible purchase and use within BTC.


    Supervisory Experience:

    This position will not directly supervise other staff but will informally provide direction to other staff in how to complete work assignments and will be a technical project leader.



    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:


    1. Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage time, schedule work activities and manage multiple priorities effectively.
    2. Strong commitment to customer service with an ability to positively interact with a wide variety of people including co-workers, colleagues, students and the general public on an ongoing basis.
    3. Ability to use the IT help desk incident management system and project management tools.
    4. Expert knowledge of server installation, configuration, security, and administration.
    5. Knowledge and skills in applying vendor patches and upgrades.
    6. Knowledge and skills in Microsoft Windows Server, Active Directory, Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, IIS, as well as, Office 365, Azure AD, ADFS, end-point & server security.
    7. Demonstrated knowledge and technical skills in supporting network connectivity. Technical certifications such as MCITP, MCTS and VCP are a plus.


    Education & Experience:

    1. Assoicate’s Degree in IT related field. (Bachelor’s Degree in IT related field preferred)
    2. MCTS/MCITP certification desired.
    3. Three (3) years of managing VMware ESXi architecture supporting enterprise virtualization environments. Direct experience supporting DRS, vDistributed Switches, High Availability, and Fault Tolerance.
    4. Four (4) years information technology experience with recent direct experience installing and maintaining server hardware and software for Microsoft Windows Server 2003, 2008 and 2012 R2.
    5. Three (3) years experience supporting Windows 7/Windows 10 and Office 2010/2013/2016 software.
